Every Year the holidays that have American roots become more and more popular worldwide. Your Ukrainian bride should know more about the traditions of the Thanksgiving holiday if this holiday is celebrated in your country.
Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the last Thursday of November, but many Americans take a day of vacation at the same time on Friday, and, as a result, get four days off. It allows them to make long trips to visit relatives or friends.
The history of the festival goes back to 1621 when the Puritans arrived in Massachusetts, determined to practice without interference their unorthodox religion. After a harsh winter, in which about half of the settlers died, they turned for help to neighbouring Indians, who taught them how to plant corn and other crops. The collected next autumn bountiful harvest inspired them with thought to thank God, for a festive meal.
Feast on Thanksgiving Day became a national tradition - not only because so many Americans have achieved prosperity in this land, but also because our imagination still amazes the sacrifices that brought the first settlers for their freedom.
On this day, Thanksgiving Day dinner almost always includes something of the foods served at the first festive feast: roast turkey, cranberry sauce, potatoes, and pumpkin pie. Before the meal, the family and friends gathered together to express gratitude for these gifts, including those for the joy of the meeting on the occasion.
