The evening of January 6 is Christmas Eve. In Eastern Europe, it is called “kolyada”. The meaning of the saint night is so great that we even count our calendar from the Nativity of Christ. This holiday is particularly important and loved by Slavic women. Christmas Eve is the last day of the Christmas Fast (Advent). Traditionally on this day, people are allowed to eat only so so-called dish of boiled wheat with honey and fruit (in Eastern Europe it is “sochivo”). The tradition gave a name to the holiday. Following an old tradition Slavic girls do not eat anything until the first star rises. When the first merry light appears in the sky, it announces the birth of Christ and the holiday can be celebrated. The dinner is a real event of Christmas. Brides from Russia serve a special dinner which includes 12 dishes, all Lenten ones. Your European bride will be glad to hear congratulations from you on this day.
