For those who want to spend the winter holidays calm and measured, it is necessary to go to Spain. Like in other European countries, the folklore and religious motifs are mixed in Spain, that are especially noticeable at Christmas.

For the Spaniards, the Christmas is a family holiday, which is usually celebrated with relatives. To prepare for Christmas at the beginning of December, people decorate homes with lights and garlands. An integral attribute of the Christmas festival is Belen - the cradle of Jesus surrounded by Joseph, the Virgin Mary and the pets. The Belen is set on the eve of the holiday, a figurine of baby Jesus is placed in the cradle at midnight on December 24.

December 25 relatives gather together at a large table. Unlike most other countries, giving gifts in Spain is not a tradition, as there is no Santa Claus in Spanish folklore, but in some regions of the country the giving of gifts is a popular trend. In Basque, for example, instead of Santa Claus there is Olentsero who carries gifts for kids and adults.

Spanish cities are richly decorated with Christmas garlands and lights on lampposts, shop windows and public buildings. Many tourists prefer strolling through the city when they’re able to try traditional Christmas hot chestnuts that are roasted on hot coals by local hawkers.

You can hardly get at family gatherings in Spain if only you’re not the family member or closest friend. Nevertheless, there is a great number of events taken place you can attend like guests or observers.
