She broke down and gave him a cardboard calendar with little windows - the number of days before Christmas. Gerhard could open only one window a day, small cookies were hidden there. So he saw how many cookies left till the holiday and knew how many days left. By the way, when the boy grew up, his mother's invention brought him a profit - he started to issue the world's first Advent calendars - a box with little windows, behind which the chocolate candies were hidden.
